Learning Objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Explain why respiration is the body’s most fundamental life-sustaining process and describe its role in maintaining cellular function and overall health.
- Describe and evaluate the four core physiological functions of respiration, including gas exchange, acid–base regulation, pressure regulation and neural communication.
- Explain how the respiratory system is uniquely regulated by both the voluntary (somatic) and involuntary (autonomic) nervous systems, and discuss the significance of this dual control.
- Analyse how breathing rate, respiratory efficiency and breathing patterns influence cardiovascular function, autonomic regulation, heart rate variability (HRV), stress physiology and long-term health.
- Explain the physiological roles of oxygen and carbon dioxide, including the Bohr Effect, carbon dioxide tolerance and their importance in efficient oxygen delivery and respiratory regulation.
- Describe the concept of resonant frequency breathing and evaluate its effects on the cardiovascular, respiratory and autonomic nervous systems.
- Discuss the historical development of breathing practices within Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung and other contemplative traditions, relating traditional concepts to contemporary scientific understanding.
- Apply evidence-based principles of healthy breathing to recognise efficient and inefficient breathing patterns and understand their implications for health, wellbeing and performance.
- Integrate current knowledge of respiratory anatomy, physiology and neuroscience to explain how conscious breathing can be used as a practical tool for self-regulation, resilience and the cultivation of health.
