Ba Duan Jin

The Sekhem Routine

Awaken the Dragon Within
The Ba Duan Jin routine, also called the Eight Fine Exercises, and the Eight Strands of Brocade, is a revered practice of internal cultivation. At the Ptah Khi School, it is often referred to as the Sekhem Routine, reflecting its profound energetic and spiritual dimensions. This time-honoured sequence of eight movements is renowned for harmonising mind, body, and spirit, toning the body’s internal organs, balancing energy systems, and enhancing vitality. Rooted in ancient wisdom, it has stood the test of time as a powerful method for cultivating Chi and maintaining health.

Why we practice Ba Duan Jin?

Ba Duan Jin is widely recognised as a medical Chi Kung (Yi Gong), a classification of Chi Kung focused on therapeutic benefits. Unlike martial or spiritual Chi Kung, medical Chi Kung is designed specifically to regulate the body’s physiological systems, support organ function, and promote healing. Its structured, slow, and deliberate movements stimulate meridian pathways, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and enhance circulation, making it a natural adjunct to traditional medicine.

Modern research supports the efficacy of Ba Duan Jin in improving cardiovascular health, immune function, and nervous system regulation. Studies have shown its ability to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and enhance neuroplasticity, key factors in longevity and disease prevention. Through the lens of modern science, Ba Duan Jin gentle yet powerful techniques engage the vagus nerve, increase nitric oxide production, and support the endocannabinoid system, demonstrating its capacity to regulate stress, improve emotional balance, and restore homeostasis.

By weaving together ancient healing arts and contemporary science, the Sekhem Routine remains a living bridge between tradition and well-being, allowing practitioners to unlock their innate vitality and awaken the dragon within.

A Journey Through Time

The Origins of Ba Duan Jin

The history of Ba Duan Jin is steeped in legend and mystery, tracing its origins back thousands of years. In 1979, evidence of its ancient roots was unearthed in the form of the Dao Ying Xing Qi Fa (Method of Inducing Free Flow of Chi), a silk manuscript from the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 23 CE). This text depicted 44 figures in exercise postures strikingly similar to the Ba Duan Jin we know today.

The Dao Ying Xing Qi Fa (Method of Inducing Free Flow of Chi)

During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 to 1279 CE), the celebrated General Yeu Fei refined these practices into a cohesive system of twelve exercises to train his soldiers, later simplifying them into the iconic Eight Strands of Brocade. His army legendary success, attributed to these exercises, solidified Ba Duan Jin is reputation as a practice that cultivates strength, resilience, and harmony.

To this day, visitors to the Shaolin Temple in Henan, China, can witness statues of monks practicing Ba Duan Jin, a testament to its enduring legacy. Monks at the temple continue to incorporate these movements into their daily training, blending tradition with spiritual growth.

Symbolism of the Sekhem

The term Sekhem Shaafuy (Power Healing), is from the ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) tradition, the word Sekhem translates to “power” or “vital energy,” representing a divine force that flows through all living beings. Sekhem, embodying not just vital force, but also divine power, creation, and spiritual authority, much like the concept of Chi in Daoist philosophy. As such, the term expresses the sacred practice through which practitioners channel and refine this potent energy. By engaging with the movements, one aligns with the universal flow of Sekhem, fostering healing, balance, and spiritual growth. Whether viewed through the lens of Sekhem as “vital energy” or “divine power,” this practice blends ancient Egyptian wisdom with Daoist energetic principles to deepen self-awareness, promote vitality, and strengthen the connection to the greater forces of the universe.
