ABOUT THIS COURSE
Stress is a normal part of life, but when demands continue without sufficient opportunity for recovery, it can become more difficult to settle the body and mind, particularly when preparing for sleep.
How do we recognise when we are becoming stressed or overstimulated? What happens when we struggle to switch off at the end of the day? And how can we use simple, practical methods to support relaxation and recovery?
This course explores these questions through the relationship between breathing, movement, attention and the nervous system.
You will be introduced to the role of the autonomic nervous system in responding to demands and supporting recovery. We will explore how gentle movement, comfortable breathing and deliberate relaxation can influence our experience of tension, arousal and calmness.
The session combines accessible nervous system education with guided practical exercises. Rather than relying on a single technique, you will have the opportunity to explore different approaches, observe your responses and consider which methods may be most useful in your everyday life.
The aim is to develop a better understanding of your own responses to stress and to build a simple collection of practices that can support relaxation, particularly during the transition from daytime activity towards rest.
INFORMATION
This course is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in understanding stress, improving relaxation habits and exploring practical approaches to preparing for sleep.
No previous experience of Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, breathwork or meditation is required.
The course is delivered live through an online virtual classroom, with opportunities to practise the exercises, ask questions and reflect on your experience.
All exercises are approached gently, with an emphasis on comfort, individual awareness and working within your own limits. Breathing practices will focus on comfortable, natural breathing rather than forcing the breath or holding it for extended periods.
This is an educational well-being course and does not replace medical advice, assessment or treatment for persistent sleep difficulties or health conditions.
COURSE CONTENT
Understanding Stress and Arousal: Exploring how the nervous system responds to demands, why it can be difficult to settle after a busy day, and the importance of recovery.
Breathing for Relaxation: Practising comfortable breathing techniques, including gentle breathing with an unforced, slightly extended exhalation where appropriate.
Mindful Movement: Exploring simple movements inspired by Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung to develop body awareness, reduce unnecessary muscular effort and encourage physical ease.
Recognising Tension: Developing awareness of physical sensations and habitual patterns of tension that may accompany stress.
Relaxation and Recovery: Exploring practical methods to help the body settle and the mind disengage from the demands of the day.
Preparing for Sleep: Considering how breathing, movement, environmental cues and consistent evening routines can support the transition towards sleep.
Creating Your Personal Reset: Bringing the exercises together into a short, practical routine that can be adapted for use during the day or before bed.
The session combines education, guided practice and reflection, helping you understand not only what to practise, but also how to observe your responses and make informed choices about the methods you use.
