ABOUT THIS COURSE

What is Tai Chi Chuan, and how can we begin to understand its principles through movement and direct experience?

Tai Chi Chuan belongs to the Chinese internal martial arts tradition. It combines coordinated movement, postural organisation, balance and awareness, providing a framework for exploring how the body moves and responds to changing demands. For beginners, learning Tai Chi involves more than memorising a sequence of movements. It requires an understanding of how we stand, transfer our weight, coordinate the body and move with greater control and awareness.

This course introduces these fundamental principles through guided teaching and practical exercises. You will explore the importance of posture, coordination and balance, while learning how individual movements connect to form a continuous sequence. The emphasis is on understanding the principles behind the practice rather than simply copying the external shape of a movement. Through observation, demonstration and repetition, you will have opportunities to investigate how small adjustments can influence your movement and overall experience of Tai Chi. By the end of the session, you will have learned the foundations of a short routine that you can practise independently and develop further over time.

INFORMATION

This course is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in learning Tai Chi Chuan through a traditional Wudang approach. No previous experience of Tai Chi Chuan or other martial arts is required. The course is delivered live through an online virtual classroom, with guided demonstrations, practical instruction and opportunities to ask questions. You will be encouraged to work at your own pace, paying attention to your balance, coordination and comfortable range of movement. The aim is to establish a sound foundation for continued learning rather than rush through movements without understanding them. You do not need specialist equipment. A clear space in which to stand and move comfortably is sufficient.
