STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION, ROOTEDNESS AND WHOLE-BODY CONNECTION

How do we develop internal strength, and what distinguishes it from simply using muscular effort?

This live online course explores the principles of Nei Kung through practical exercises that develop structural integration, rootedness, coordinated movement and whole-body connection. Through guided teaching and direct experience, you will investigate how posture, alignment, relaxation and the organisation of the body contribute to the development of internal strength. The course is intended for students who have established a foundation in the internal arts and are ready to investigate these principles in greater depth.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

What does it mean to develop internal strength, and how can we understand the processes through which the body becomes more integrated, coordinated and stable?

Nei Kung is associated with the cultivation of internal skills through dedicated practice. Within the traditional Chinese internal arts, these skills involve more than increasing muscular strength. They include developing the relationship between posture, structure, movement, relaxation and awareness so that the body can function as a more coordinated whole.

This course investigates the principles that contribute to this process. Through guided exercises such as bone marrow washing, static postures, and through the practical exploration of slow refined movement, you will examine how the organisation of the body influences rootedness, how movement can be coordinated through the whole-body structure, and how unnecessary tension can interfere with the development of more integrated movement. We will explore the relationship between stability and mobility, considering how rootedness can provide a foundation for movement without creating rigidity. You will also investigate how the alignment and coordination of different parts of the body influence the transmission of force and the ability to maintain structural integrity during movement.

The course draws on the traditional principles of Nei Kung and encourages you to investigate them through direct experience. Rather than treating internal strength as an abstract concept, the emphasis is on understanding what these principles mean in practice, how they can be developed through consistent training, and how they relate to the wider study of the internal arts. By the end of the session, you will have explored a range of exercises designed to deepen your understanding of internal strength and provide direction for your continued practice.

INFORMATION

This course is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike, including anyone interested in exploring the relationship between traditional practices, the human body and modern scientific understanding. No previous experience in Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, Nei Kung or related practices is required. Whether you are new to these subjects or looking to deepen your existing knowledge, the course provides an opportunity to explore the principles involved.

The course is delivered live through an online virtual classroom. Teaching combines explanation, demonstration and guided practice, with opportunities to ask questions and investigate the principles being explored. Participants should have sufficient space to stand and move comfortably. The exercises will be approached progressively, with an emphasis on careful observation, appropriate alignment and developing skill through practice rather than forcing the body into positions or movements.

The course is educational and experiential. It introduces traditional training principles alongside relevant scientific perspectives and encourages participants to develop their own understanding through practical exploration, consistent practice and reflection.

COURSE CONTENT

Understanding Nei Kung: Explore the meaning and purpose of Nei Kung within the internal arts, with particular attention to the principles involved in developing internal strength.

Structural Integration: Investigate how the relationship between the feet, legs, pelvis, spine and upper body contributes to whole-body organisation and coordinated movement.

Rootedness and Stability: Explore how stances the distribution of weight, the relationship with the ground and the organisation of posture contribute to stability without unnecessary rigidity.

Relaxation and Structural Integrity: Examine the difference between releasing unnecessary muscular tension and maintaining the structural support required for effective movement.

Whole-Body Coordination: Practise exercises that develop greater awareness of how different parts of the body work together, rather than relying on isolated muscular action.

Developing Internal Strength: Investigate traditional training principles associated with the development of internal strength, including the relationship between structure, coordinated movement, intention and physical expression.

Integration Through Practice: Bring the principles together through guided exercises and reflection, considering how regular training can progressively refine structural awareness, rootedness and whole-body coordination.

The session combines traditional principles with practical investigation, encouraging you to observe how the body responds to different methods of practice. The aim is to develop a clearer understanding of internal strength and establish a more considered approach to continued training.
