Chi Gong is the foundational practice of Tai Chi, which itself serves as the root of movement. Rooted in Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian philosophies, Chi Gong is a pathway to higher realms of awareness, awakening one’s “true nature,” and unlocking human potential. Through Chi Gong practice, individuals engage in moving meditation, where slow, flowing movements are harmonized with deep, rhythmic breathing and a calm, focused state of mind.

What is Chi Gong?
The term “Chi Gong” is derived from two Chinese words: Chi (Qi, Ki, Khi), which literally means “Life Force Energy,” and Gong or Kung, meaning “cultivation” or “work.” Thus, Chi Gong or Chi Kung can be understood as the cultivation of life force energy that flows through all living beings, a practice designed to align the body, breath, and mind. This alignment supports health, meditation, and martial arts training. The roots of Chi Gong can be traced back to ancient Daoist/Taoist traditions, where the practice was integral to their teachings, and way of life.
Chi Gong
The Foundation of Movement
Chi Gong is a powerful practice that combines movement, breath, and meditation to cultivate Chi, the life force energy that flows through all living beings. As the foundation of Tai Chi, Chi Gong offers a holistic approach to wellness, integrating mind, body, and spirit. Rooted in ancient Taoist principles, Chi Gong helps to promote balance, health, and heightened awareness.
Ba Duan Jin
(The Sekhem Routine)
Ba Duan Jin is a traditional set of eight simple yet profound exercises that form the foundation of Ptah Khi School Chi Gong practice. These movements are designed to balance the body’s energy, increase flexibility, and promote the smooth flow of Chi. Each of the eight postures corresponds to a specific health benefit and is deeply rooted in Chinese medicine and philosophy.

Static postures
Static postures are an essential aspect of both Chi Gong and Tai Chi practices. These postures involve holding still positions for extended periods, allowing energy to accumulate in the body and circulate freely.
Natural Breathing
Breathing is one of the most essential components of Chi Gong and Tai Chi practice. Natural breathing is a relaxed, deep form of breathing that synchronizes with the movements of the body to enhance the flow of Chi. It’s often described as breathing from the dantian, a point located just below the navel that serves as the center of Chi.

The Five Elements Theory
The Five Elements Theory (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) is a fundamental concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Chi Gong. Each element corresponds to a specific season, organ, emotion, and other aspects of life. Understanding these elements helps us balance our internal energies and harmonize our connection to the natural world.
The Role of the Five Elements in Chi Gong Movement
Each Chi Gong movement can be aligned with one of the Five Elements to balance energy in the body. For example, movements for the Wood element may involve stretches and flexing postures to promote growth and flexibility, while Water movements might focus on fluid, flowing motions to encourage introspection and calm.
